Our chief want
"Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be who we know we could be."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
That quote is especially meaningful to me, because it was the impetus for starting The Shine in 2014, and we just celebrated our two-year anniversary.
For those who don't know, The Shine is an event (and really, a movement) that was founded as a means of spreading inspiration--waaaay before these posts.
While lying in bed one morning about five years ago, I got the vision of a gathering of people coming together to share in the experience of tea, meditation, storytelling, community, and music.
I ignored it for two years, thinking it would just fade away... but it only grew stronger.
Eventually, it got to the point where I couldn't ignore it any longer. Just then, someone I taught to meditate approached me and asked if she could help me build more community.
Recognizing that as a sign from Nature, I told her about the concept for The Shine (although I didn't have a name for it at the time), and we hatched a plan for the first one in July 2014.
The name just occurred to me one afternoon while sitting at my dining table working on my taxes. I thought: that's it! We should call it "The Shine."
12 people showed up to the first one. I made some honey, lemon, ginger tea, we meditated together, and I gave a talk on the importance (and the struggles) of living from a place of inspiration.
Each week we added in new elements: music, different speakers, philanthropy, etc. And over two years, The Shine blossomed into a bi-monthly, bi-coastal event with over 250 people in attendance, and with an all-volunteer team of creatives who help to curate the experience.
But the mission is still the same: to inspire one another to do more, be more and give more--same as these Daily Doses of Inspiration.
I hope you get to join us for a future Shine event soon, or perhaps you'll host a Shine in your part of the world. It really is something quite special.
